Pre-school, elementary, and high school classes in all private and public schools in Metro Manila and some nearby cities and provinces are suspended Friday, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.
DepEd National Capital Region Director Elena Ruiz issued the announcement in an interview with dzMM Thursday.
Several colleges and universities also announced the suspension of their respective classes in accordance with guidelines set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Arellano University, La Consolacion College – Pasig, Centro Escolar University – Makati, Trinity University of Asia and STI College – Caloocan suspended Friday classes.
The DepEd also announced in its Twitter account that all classes in pre-school, elementary, and high school in, Dasmarinas, Rosario, Bacoor, Cavite City in Cavite are suspended Friday.
The DepEd earlier set rules on the suspension of classes during typhoons and other emergencies.
Classes were already suspended in some parts of Metro Manila on Thursday following heavy rains and floods.
Classes in public and private preschool, elementary, and high schools in Angono, Cainta , Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Calamba City, Bulacan, Antipolo City, Malolos City, Subic, Zambales, Bataan, and Pangasinan are also suspended on Friday.
Flashfloods
Flashfloods have struck many parts of Metro Manila following heavy rains.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported waist-deep floods in Quezon City, specifically along Maria Clara St., Araneta Avenue and N.S. Amoranto St. due to the overflowing of Talayan Creek.
Honorio Lopez Blvd., from Tondo Hospital to S. De Jesus St., was submerged in 12 inches of flood due to high tide and rainshowers.
Imelda Ave. in Pasig was submerged in 19 inches of water.
MMDA advised motorists to avoid Northbound EDSA as gutter-deep flooding at P. Tuazon tunnel caused traffic to come to a standstill. Flood control units have been dispatched to the area, MMDA said.
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the amount of rainfall in Quezon City on Thursday afternoon reached 44.4mm in 3 hours.
Storm signal hoisted
As of 5 a.m., 3 areas in Northern Luzon are now under storm signal number 1 as tropical storm "Falcon" has merged with a low pressure area and intensified slightly as it moves northwestward at 19 kilometers per hour (kph), the state weather bureau said.
Under storm signal number 1 are Calayan, the Babuyan Group of Islands, and the Batanes Group of Islands.
